I rarely use my HVAC during the Winter months

I was away from home for over a week, and when I left town, the temperature was in the 30s.

This is abnormal for the part of the country that I live in, as we are used to having very mild weather for the Winter months.

In fact, I barely use my HVAC for heating because the weather is usually not cold enough to justify turning it on. I returned home a few days ago and the temperature had risen to the high 70s and low 80s, which is about normal for this time of year. Of course, that is a huge difference from the 30 degrees that we experienced a week ago. Well, because the temperature was so cold, I decided to leave my thermostat at 65. After I researched the proper setting for the thermostat in the Winter and discovered it was 68 degrees, I thought that 65 would be an ideal temperature for my thermostat. I am not sure if the HVAC cycled on while I was away as the cold blast only lasted for a couple of days. The temperature was back into the 60s, and then eventually, rose into the 70s. This fluctuation in temperature makes it hard to determine how to use my HVAC during the Winter months. So, you can’t blame me for not using it much at all. In fact, I prefer to use a space heater on those nights when the temperature drops below normal. Typically, that happens less than 10 times during the Winter season. If nothing else, I get to save some money by not using my HVAC in the Winter.
