It wasn’t until 1902 when the first air conditioner was invented by a man named Willis Carrier. It’s funny because he wasn’t even trying to invent an air conditioner, but rather a way to control the humidity levels in his printing plant where he worked. The mechanical air conditioner unit which he made, basically sent air through water cooled coils. Later on he developed the centrifugal chiller which added a compressor to reduce the size of the unit. Then in 1925, the upgraded air conditioner debuted at the Rivoli Theatre in Times Square. This caused the masses to enjoy going to the movie theaters to escape from the immense heat in the summer. This was the rise of the summer blockbuster. It’s amazing to look at history and see how technology has developed. In the days before A/C, people basically had to use fans, some powered, but most people had to use hand fans as they didn’t have money to afford anything fancy. I’m grateful that nowadays, we have gone so far with heating and cooling technology, that you don’t have to be rich to have a nice climate control system. Even the great kings in the past had nothing like we do these days. So if you’re ever feeling down, you should think about what you really have in your life. Most people get to live like a king or queen thanks to our wonderful climate control systems in this day and age. So don’t sweat the small stuff and just enjoy your cooling A/C system and other fancy technological advancements.
