When some of my cousins invited me to join them for a night of cards, I happily agreed to go. While I was excited to hang out with them again since it had been a while, but I was also happy to have an excuse to get out of my house for the evening. My HVAC equipment had stopped working a few days earlier, and my local repair shop wasn’t able to schedule me an appointment until the following week. So, while waiting for my HVAC unit to be inspected and repaired, I was stuck inside a house without any air conditioning. I grabbed a case of beer and some snacks on my way and was greeted by my cousins at the door. A few other family members were there plus some of my cousins’ friends, and I had a good time chatting with everyone and playing cards. As the night progressed, people began to head home, but I stayed. I’d have to return to a hot, stuffy house without air conditioning, so I decided to stay until the end. As the group dwindled in size, one of my cousins suggested we play a few betting rounds. I wasn’t ready to leave yet, so I agreed. As luck would have it, I ended up winning nearly every game! For our last round, I jokingly suggested my cousin bet the window AC unit in the living room that had been cooling the house all evening, and I was shocked when he did! Everyone burst out laughing to find I had won yet another round. True to his word, my cousin took down his AC, and came back to my place to help install it. I returned it right after my home’s own HVAC system was repaired, but it felt wonderful to have the window unit’s cooling in the meantime.
