Trying to save money on HVAC replacement almost backfired

Thankfully, I listen to my wife.

  • Otherwise, my life could be a complete dumpster fire.

Upon reflection, many of my great ideas were in fact, just garbage. I had one of said ideas when we decided to replace the HVAC equipment. Generally speaking, I am loathe to spend more money than I ever have to. However, I have a terrible internal compass on just where exactly to draw those types of lines. When the HVAC tech came out to do the air conditioning tune up last spring, he also came bearing bad news. The HVAC professional told us that it would be best if we started making plans to replace the heat pump. That immediately started my monetary stupidity machine placed in my head. My wife thought it would be a good idea to start a savings account. She was right and we did. But I got it in my head that I could shop around for a heat pump online and save just a whole bunch of money. So I did just that. And I found a brand name piece of HVAC equipment to replace our old HVAC unit. Then, I called the HVAC company to schedule a time to install. My wife asked the HVAC contractor to come out prior to the installation week to inspect the house. That was a very good thing. I bought a heat pump that was too big for the volume of my house. More power didn’t mean better in this case as heat pumps have to fit the volume of the house they are heating and cooling.
