Stopping a big reason for high air conditioning bills

It’s so common sense but I just didn’t get it

I’m still figuring out living in the south. From what to order on some of the menus to trying to understand what is being said, it’s a lot to get accustomed to. I’m pure born and bred Yankee so it’s not all that easy. One thing that was easy though was getting accustomed to the winter. After a whole life of snow, ice and gas furnace heating, I was pleased to accept the heat pump into my life. And I was even more pleased that the heat pump really doesn’t get much of a workout during the winter. I could count on both hands the number of days that we really needed some HVAC heating. I will say though that the heat pump always delivered on the heating when we needed it. But the summer and the level of heat is a whole other animal. I have not been great about figuring out how to live with the heat. My preference would be go back north from June through September to just avoid the issue. That’s unlikely so I’ve just been throwing more HVAC cooling at the summer. That works but it sure has come at a steep price. So I did a bit of learning and found out a big reason that’s happening is the direct sunlight heating of my home. I have almost half the house that gets direct sunlight. It’s so common sense but I just didn’t get it. This summer, I had solar shades installed on that side of the house to stop the direct sunlight heating and save me a bunch of money.
