Our son always whines about his chore of changing the air filter

A long time ago, I gave our son the chore to change the air filters for the HVAC system.

I would give him the money to go buy the packs of air filters.

They were always the same price and they had a fairly decent MERV rating, so the air quality in our home was usually not too shabby. Well, many times I have noticed the air quality was lacking this past year. I honestly don’t know why I have to keep reminding my son to change the air filters, it’s such an important thing to do! I even started writing it on the calendar so that he wouldn’t forget to do this important chore. Well, the air quality keeps getting bad and that’s when I realize the air filter is not changed and I go to yell at my son. I feel it’s very important that he learns how to do this chore regularly. I want it drilled into his head so that he knows never to forget to do this when he lives on his own one day. I mean is that doing too much as a parent? At the rate we are going, I feel he’s just not going to care about changing the air filter, because he always complains when I remind him to do it. He acts like it’s the biggest pain in the world and it’s going to kill him or something. He would rather just play his video games all day and I don’t think that’s such a great thing for his developing mind. Sometimes I don’t know what to do other than to try to push him to make the right decisions like going to college soon in the future. I hope he takes his career seriously. But who knows, maybe he might do something amazing like step into the HVAC industry!
