My time in construction served me well

For six years, I worked in construction with various teams.

  • Sometimes I worked with contractors in the electrical, plumbing and HVAC industries, but often times I worked with my own team of general contractors that could do a little bit of everything.

In that time, I learned a number of useful traits and skills, especially when it came to installing new heating and air conditioning equipment! That informal training really helped me out recently, when my wife and I decided to buy a ductless mini-split heating and air conditioning unit for our garage at home. While my wife uses the garage for “hot yoga”, I use it as a home gym and keep a squat rack as well as a bench in there for training. Since we have various pieces of equipment in the garage that can be corroded or warped by temperature fluctuations, we felt a ductless mini-split HVAC system would serve us well. One part of installing a ductless mini-split system that trips many people up is boring a hole through the wall, where the connections for the inside and outside pieces of the system conjoin. That was a piece of cake for me, since I had installed about three dozen of these ductless mini-split systems in my time as a construction worker. I was glad to knock out the installation in under a day, as my wife was eager to use the heating function for her yoga session. I was just glad to be done with it in no time.
