My brother may have been going for his HVAC certification, but he wasn't a technician.

He brought the old air filter upstairs to put out in the dumpster, and chuckled as he went by.

Right after high school, my young brother decided he was going to go to school for HVAC certification. My parents were so proud that he was going to HVAC school. He was only halfway through his courses, when my father decided that it would be okay to have my brother service the furnace for him. I reminded mom that although he was going for HVAC certification, he still wasn’t an HVAC technician. Dad told me to quit being so critical, and allow my brother to do the job. I shut my mouth and walked away. I no longer lived in that house, and I didn’t have the right to voice my opinion. Once my brother was done servicing the furnace, he came upstairs and told dad that everything looked fine. I knew dad was going to get upset with me but I asked my brother if he had changed the air filter? The look in his eyes was priceless as he ran back to the basement door and down to the furnace. He brought the old air filter upstairs to put out in the dumpster, and chuckled as he went by. He thanked me for reminding him about the air filter. My father didn’t hear me mention the air filter to my brother and neither one of us said anything, but the next time dad asked him to do something with the HVAC system, he told him that he wanted to wait. He didn’t want to get into trouble before getting his certification. He thought it would be best to graduate before he tried doing anything else with the HVAC.
