No one had ever taught me how to change air filters in the furnace or the air conditioning unit.
I’m not sure if they thought it was just common sense, but it was not common sense for me.
I knew it was necessary to change air filters, but I didn’t know where to find them. For six months, I was calling the HVAC company and having them send out a technician to change the air filters for me. One afternoon, one of the the HVAC technicians told me that I could change the air filters on my own. He showed me where to find the air filter in both the furnace and the air conditioning unit and how to make sure they were put in properly. He explained that there was a way to install the air filter into the HVAC system without causing any damage. He also explained to me the necessity of an air filter and why you needed to change them regularly. It was interesting to hear him explain how the air filter removed a lot of dust and debris from the air before it was able to get into my home. The air filter also removed a lot of debris that could’ve gotten into my air conditioning unit and furnace and done damage to the components. After listening to his explanation about the importance of an air filter, I made a point of changing them about once a month. I didn’t want to see any damage done to either my HVAC system, or to the air that I breathe. Once he was done explaining about the air filters, he asked when I last had the ductwork cleaned.
