Found an old plumbing repair

My husband and I are in the middle of a kitchen remodel.

We have tried to hire services out, but haven’t had much success. Thank goodness my husband is so handy. The kitchen remodel requires him messing with both electric and plumbing. He has successfully moved my stove, vent hood and added more outlets. Currently he is messing with our plumbing in the basement. My husband thought the job would be really simple. We have the old copper piping that he planned to replace with PEX pipe. He also thinks he may be able to use flexible hosing in a pinch. He already has moved the dishwasher successfully and is currently messing with the sink. He cut off the pipes and then went into the basement. My husband then discovered the previous homeowner must have called a plumber for a repair. My husband showed me the pipes that were patched with cement. The patch job was terrible though. The sealant they put around the pipes was crumbling off and not working really well. It made the project a huge mess when he tried to shift the pipes over. My husband spent most of his time in the basement repairing the former plumbing issue before tackling our current kitchen piping. The two of us wish we knew what plumbing business was called before. We both agree that we would never use them. Hopefully our plumbing turns out to be in top shape for years and it won’t matter. You never know when you need gas line repair or the septic system pumped.
