Escaping quarantine in a remote cabin

Personally I think the lockdown was a great idea, but that’s only because it gave me both the reason and the time to go out to the old cabin in the woods.

I try to get up there a few times a year to fish, to take pictures, just take some “me time” you know? Here was a chance to go up there for several weeks, really live off the land for a while.

It also would provide me the best possible protection against the coronavirus — being away from other people! There were a few hurdles to overcome, namely the lack of a heating and cooling system in the cabin, but it was nothing a little elbow grease wouldn’t solve. The great thing about roughing it is that everything is in your hands, as long as you have the right tools, so as long as I had my axe I didn’t need to worry about heating. The cabin had a fireplace and a wood burning furnace that doubled as a water heater, so all I needed was firewood and I would not freeze. Of course, freezing was not an issue at this time of year, and not having a steady cooling system might be more problematic. Although like my old man always told me, if you get too hot you will sweat it out, if you get too cold then you need heating or you will die. In other words, AC is a luxury, a privilege, where heating is like water and food and shelter — a necessity for staying alive.
