Closing air vents might be harmful to your HVAC system

It’s such a task to manage the temperature in your home and energy costs.

  • And many homeowners try to find a solution by closing their air conditioner vents.

If you want to move cooler air to other rooms or reduce your daily energy costs, closing vents might seem like a reasonable solution. However, you might want to reconsider because although at first you might notice some difference in your home, closing the vents could potentially be harmful. Your system will need to work harder than it should, or the air will find another way out, such as leaky HVAC ducts. Closing air vents will not help you to conserve energy. The system will still have to work to push that same amount of air out. So, this could and will increase your energy costs. Of course, each home and situation is different. If you want to manage the temperature in your home, use zoning and mini-split systems. A zoning system is ideal if you have multiple floors or if your home has a large floor plan. With a zoning system, you can set various temperatures in different sections or areas of the home to help maintain comfort. Additionally, you will not be heating or cooling parts of the house that aren’t in use, which will therefore reduce your energy costs. For additional heating or cooling, you need to use mini-split systems especially if you have added an additional room or space to your home and cannot extend your HVAC ducts. Installation of a mini-split system is relatively simple as well. The only components needed are an interior unit mounted to an exterior wall and a condenser that goes outside.
