When areas are not occupied, the lights can be turned off in order to save money. The same is true for heating and cooling. Building automation systems make it possible for large companies to save money instead of heating and cooling entire floors of the building. I work for a commercial business downtown and we were spending a ton of money to heat the entire factory during the winter months. We only had one shift running during the winter months and it didn’t make a lot of sense to heat the entire building with one shift running through a third of the factory. We spoke to an engineer about building automation systems and how they can help with the management of heating. We found out that there were lots of different systems that could help us monitor heating and cooling levels and only provide heat in areas where there was actually someone working. I assumed this expensive temperature control system would be too much money for the business due to the complexity, but the price was surprisingly more affordable than I could have guessed. Between rebates and government kickbacks, it was an affordable option to present to my boss for consideration.
