My neighbor Gabriela works as a beekeeper now. As a child she was constantly about the critters and enjoy pretty much everyone. I figured she would be a veterinarian or task for PETA. Instead she went the beekeeping route. I am uneasy to say that my entire expertise on beekeeping is from the film The Secret Life of Bees… The film is really great and powerful. It deals with racial tension in the South and finding family in totally unexpected places. A big portion of the motion picture is beekeeping though. Queen Latifah is the main beekeeper for the honeybees, she uses the bees to produce honey and then has honey for sale in her property and out of shops. Watching the process in the film was really fascinating. First she had to wear this really insulated outfit with a screen over her face. She then had a whole procedure on how to safely access the honeybees and remove the honey without totally annoying them. After enjoying the film, I figured they must have taken some special creative liberties. I looked online about beekeeping so I could talk to Gabriela about it… Nope, the film had it right all the way down to the outfits. The people also use a spray similar to how the actress did in the film to soothe the bees so you can take the honey safely. I would say the only section of the film that is sort of lacking is how Queen Latifah got her bees. She obviously is getting it from people who had awful bee infestations in their property. It is especially powerful because she takes in a little girl just like how she did her bees.
