The night was cold and wet and we were lucky to have the furnace

The weather around here is often cold and wet and sometimes the living room is drafty.

  • I decided to put some weather stripping around the doors and the windows and that helped a little bit.

Still, I think we’re lucky to have the furnace. On nights when it is very cold and wet, we turn on the electric furnace and let it run. I don’t like to waste electricity, but cold rain makes me want to turn on the heat. We had some really cold weather this week. Temperatures were only in the 40s during the day and overnight we had lows in the twenties. It’s very rare for this part of the state to have such low temperatures and I was not prepared. I didn’t have the furnace running at all on the first night. I had to get up in the middle of the night and turn on the emergency heat. I was worried that the pipes were going to freeze and burst. I was probably worried for nothing, but the last thing I wanted to do was call an emergency plumber in the middle of the night to fix a burst pipe. I waited until the house was up to temperature and then I turned off the emergency heat and set the furnace to a warm and comfortable 70°. I haven’t been able to turn off the furnace yet. The daytime temperatures are getting a little bit warmer, but it is still in the low 30s at night and hovering around the freezing area. It’s best to keep the furnace running for now.
