The guy charged me for services and ran away

I contacted a lawyer, but this is a civil case and one that cannot be prosecuted because I don’t even know the real name of the person that was handling the services

I wanted to save money on repair services and installation fees, so I contacted a company that I found online. I asked the owner of the company if he was certified, licensed, and bonded. He responded with an affirmative yes, but I did not double-check. I made a lot of mistakes when I hired the person to complete the work. The guy wanted half of the money up front. I didn’t find that to be unusual, so I paid the man $850. He was supposed to begin that job on Saturday morning. I called and called when the guy did not show up. At first I got a voicemail message and then the mailbox was full. A few days later, the phone number was turned off completely. I trusted someone to install a mini split and ductless HVAC unit and the guy took my money and ran. I contacted a lawyer, but this is a civil case and one that cannot be prosecuted because I don’t even know the real name of the person that was handling the services. The ad online advertising services for the technician was gone by the time my lawyer started snooping around the internet. I don’t have a lot of proof that this guy was supposed to do what he said and it seems like I am going to be out $850 for my insane stupidity. I still need to find someone to install the machinery and now I’m out half of my money I had for the project.
