We laughed when I told him I could figure it out
I noticed that everyone was avoiding the work order that had just come in. I hadn’t worked for the HVAC company very long, and I didn’t want to take the work order if an older HVAC technician wanted it. I waited for almost two hours before asking the dispatcher if she had someone special in mind for the work order. She looked me up and down, and then she chuckled. She asked if I was sure I wanted the work order, and she also asked how tall I was. I told her I was 6’4”, but I couldn’t figure out what that had to do with anything. She gave me directions to the house and told me they needed to have their furnace serviced. When I got to the house, it was nothing more than a bungalow that my grandparents used to live in. I couldn’t wait to get inside and see the house. The old gentleman showed me to the furnace room, and I was taken aback. The ceiling in the basement couldn’t have been much more than four feet high. I now knew why the dispatcher asked how tall I was and why she chuckled. The owner of the house said he had been a long time HVAC customer, and he couldn’t figure out why he didn’t get the same HVAC technician twice in a row. We laughed when I told him I could figure it out. He chuckled and told me that all I had to do was a service call and he would request a short HVAC technician the next time he needed help. Although my back was never going to be the same, I was glad I got to meet the old couple.
