Getting after winter prep to bring HVAC heating cost down

It’s the end of September and I’m actually almost through with the winter prep on the house.

Unlike every preceding year, I’m not saying that I’ll for sure get to saving on HVAC heating next year.

Last winter sort of did for me when it came to high HVAC heating costs. In our region, there was a substantial heating cost hike last year. And I tried to mitigate those costs by pushing the thermostat setting even further down. So not only did I pay more than I wanted to for HVAC heating, I was not warm while doing it. That was sort of it for me. The fact that I had done nothing toward saving money on HVAC heating since we bought this house was on me and enough was enough. Our house is older and so was in desperate need of getting sealed up tight. So I started the weekend before the kids went back to school. I used a step by step guide I downloaded from the HVAC website to really seal the house up. I started with replacing the weather stripping and the storm doors. Then, I scoured the entire exterior of the house to find any gap or crack to seal them up. I added more insulation to the attic and even re-insulated a pair of windows that were known to be drafty. And it’s not even October. I knew that if I waited, I’d be in the same boat I was last winter and I wasn’t going to let that happen. Now, all I have to do is to call the HVAC company to come out to do the HVAC heating maintenance so the gas furnace is working at its most efficient.
