A technician tried to talk me into getting plastic HVAC duct replacement in my house

The tire and lube place where I used to get my car’s oil changed was terrible about always offering unnecessary services just to make more money on every person walking through the door.

I can’t tell you how many times they told me that my transmission lines needed to be flushed after I agreed to it the first time.

They did the same thing with tire rotations as well. I just wanted a place close to my house where I could get my oil changed on a bi-annual basis. I didn’t need a sketchy car mechanic to fleece me at every chance possible. Unfortunately, this deviousness isn’t isolated to car mechanics. My most recent example of this behavior came from a heating and cooling technician who I hired to inspect my air conditioner after my previous HVAC contractor went out of business. I just wanted him to look inside my air handler and run a few pressure tests on the air current and the refrigerant powering the system. Instead, he started lecturing me about my old metal ductwork and how it is likely filled with air contaminants after so many years of continued use. I asked him how much it would cost for ductwork cleaning, but he shook his head and started his sales pitch on plastic-flex ductwork. I’ve heard this before and I sent him on his way. If you need to put an air conditioner inside a residence with extremely limited space, plastic-flex ductwork might be your only option. But replacing custom metal ductwork with plastic-flex is ludicrous on every level. He just didn’t want to admit that he isn’t licensed to clean ductwork. He instead peddles cheap plastic-flex ductwork that has to be replaced every 10-15 years from natural deterioration.
