I am successful running the HVAC business, but not doing the work

To be totally clear, I don’t have my certification, so I am not an HVAC equipment worker.

  • I am the field boss, the site manager, and one of the co-owners of the business.

I am not a tech, one of my many tasks is to vet, interview, and hire the new techs, and to give spot superation at different task sites. They never really know for certain when I will show up, however they realize I run a slender ship so everything has to be 100% when I arrive on the scene. Once upon a time the whole idea was for me to do the training, take the courses, and get my Heating and A/C equipment certification, however life just got in the way. The crazy thing is that I have become so much more important as an administrator than I ever could be as an Heating and A/C equipment tech. That doesn’t mean I disparage my employees in any way, shape or form, I’m just saying that Heating and A/C equipment maintenance can be taught in a class, and running your own supplier can’t be taught to anybody. It really has to be gained through experience. I can find a handful of talented young Heating and A/C professionals fairly easily, however nobody else knows the ins and outs of this business the way I do. So while my whole plan had always been to run a Heating and A/C equipment crew, I am running the show, and hiring others to run the crews! At this rate I will in time be able to retire comfortably, and I have never once fixed an air conditioner or gas furnace before.
