A heat emergency caused a major issue for residence of a bustling city

From time to time, I come across articles on the internet that raise questions in my mind.

For instance, I was on a major media outlet site and came across an article that mentioned something about a massive lake that is currently drying up.

The water level is at an alltime low and now parts of the lake that was previously underwater are being exposed. After I got over the shock of that article, I moved on to another article that also made me gasp. It was about the record temperatures that one city was experiencing, and how they are in the middle of a heat emergency. Apparently, over 20,000 people in the city could not decrease the temperature on their thermostats because they were using the thermostats provided by the power company. And it sounds like the power company has ultimate control of those thermostats. Turns out, the residents signed up for a program where they gave up some control of their thermostats and in return, they received rebates from the power company. Well, this backfired big time because during the week where they experienced unusually high temperatures, the thermostats were locked in at 79 degrees. Now, 79 degrees isn’t terrible but it’s not the best temperature to sleep in. Typically, when we sleep our body temperatures rise, so it’s best to turn down the temperature on the thermostat before bed. Personally, I sleep with my A/C set at 72 degrees, and I can’t imagine how hot I would be if the thermostat was stuck on 79. I hope that the heat emergency is lifted soon, and those residents can take back control of their thermostats.
