Ways to make sure that your air conditioner functions properly

Be careful and don’t allow the snow to accumulate on the top and near the sides of the unit

If your air conditioner is working properly, you don’t give it much thought. But if your electric bill goes through the roof without changing the thermostat, you will give the issue some attention. While turned on, your air conditioner draws in excess air to cool and release warm air, and when it cannot draw in enough air or flush out warm air, the system will overheat. An A/C that runs warm normally will not last very long. How much room does your air conditioner need around it? A minimum of a single foot is recommended on all sides, including behind the unit. Keep your unit free of lawn clippings and leaves while doing yard work. The yard scraps can obstruct your air conditioner and cause it to overheat. Turn the unit off and check the temperature a few inches from the coil, which is the metallic grate surrounding your unit. Measure the temperature 10 feet away. If it is the same, your A/C is functioning properly, however, you may have a problem if the coil is warmer than the surrounding area. If you live in an area with mild temperature, you may have a heat pump instead of an air conditioner. The outdoor unit provides both heating and cooling. It needs open space at all times, especially when it snows. Be careful and don’t allow the snow to accumulate on the top and near the sides of the unit. You should turn off your heat pump if it fills up with too much snow. Warm water can be used to melt snow and ice. Let the water drain for a few hours before turning the unit back on.
