Smart devices are unnecessary

I really appreciate technology in general, but some of this newfangled technology I just don’t understand.

Why does everything have to be “smart?” There are a whole lot of things out there that can somehow connect to Wi-Fi that really don’t need to connect to Wi-Fi.

Why do I want a refrigerator that connect to the internet? Why do I need an app to tell my kids when dinner is ready? There are even some bathroom mirrors that can tell you the time, the local weather, and the headlines in addition to other things. Let me give you an example of how it should be. I have an old dial thermostat. I turn the dial to the temperature that I want my HVAC unit to create and it works! It works without connecting to the internet. It works without all of the unnecessary frills to distract you from its primary function. I have heard that there are smart thermostats out there, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want one. I have not looked into them in detail, but I have heard that a smart thermostat will eventually set temperatures on its own. This raises so many questions. Is it telling you what the temperature should be or is it reading your mind? Neither prospect sounds all that appealing to me. I will stick with my old dial thermostat, thank you very much. It doesn’t give me any sass and does exactly what I tell it to do, like any home device or appliance should.
