Shouldn’t have bet on a 26 year old heat pump

There are a million reasons that I could come up with for why I didn’t start saving for the HVAC equipment earlier.

But all those reasons are as much reasons as they are excuses.

When we first moved into this house, we had to upgrade the HVAC equipment. Since then, our home has been a wonderful place to raise a family as we are now empty nesters. Once the HVAC equipment turned twenty, that’s when I should have started saving for an HVAC upgrade. Yet there were so many other pressing things I just didn’t do it. I’m not sure it was even on my radar how old the HVAC equipment was getting. For years, we have belonged to an HVAC service plan so the HVAC unit always got the HVAC maintenance it needed without me having to think about it. I think this resulted in me having a bit of a inaccurate sense of security when it came to the HVAC unit. With all that HVAC maintenance, we never experienced a moment’s down time when it came to heating and cooling. But last spring, as the HVAC technician was doing the air conditioning tune up, I got caught off guard. He told me that it was unlikely the heat pump would make it through another blast furnace of a summer. Of course I had not saved for the new HVAC equipment and I needed more time. That led to my wife and I hoping we could get the heat pump through one more summer. It didn’t work out that way, as the heat pump finally died in August.
