My father was a big help when it came to my new home.

Two months before I graduated from college, I inherited a nice chunk of money.

I decided to move to the subtropical area where my parents lived to start my career and buy a house.

At my young age, buying a house, as well as home maintenance, could easily become overwhelming. From choosing the right home and neighborhood to having the gutters cleaned and arranging HVAC maintenance, I was not prepared for home care. Some things I could figure out on my own, both when choosing a home and living in it. I could recognize a drug infested neighborhood and my thermostat had a heat setting so obviously I didn’t have to worry about a furnace. Then there are things I would turn to my Dad for, like how to tell if a roof is leaky and how often to have the HVAC serviced. My Dad was a big help. When I found a home that I was interested in, I took Dad with my to look at it. And when I finally bought a house, Dad sat down with me and explained the things that would need to be done and how often. Then we put reminders on my phone and on a calendar. He helped me get set up with a lawn care service, a cable and wifi service, and an HVAC service plan. Someone comes to mow my lawn and weed eat every two weeks and an HVAC technician services my HVAC system when it needs it, just in case I lose my phone and calendar. It’s a good thing that I have my Dad. My home would have fallen apart without him helping me.
