Getting the most from the HVAC this winter

The following day, I did the same in the attic before laying down another layer of insulation

Here we are again. The winter is here and the cold is on top of us now. The HVAC is pumping and we are spending far less time outdoors. Plus, with the spike in the virus spread, it’s more time with just my immediate family in our home this winter. I have been working from home since all this started. And I imagine I will be doing the same for many more months to come to be safe. With this thought in mind, I decided to redouble my efforts in order to make our home as cozy as possible this year. And saving a bunch on the heating bills didn’t hurt my feelings either. This fall, I took some time to be sure that my house was the most prepared it could be for winter. Our home was built in the early 70’s. It’s in great shape but, like any home with some decades on it, it’s not quite as tight as it once was. Making sure the house is sealed up tight is one of the best things a homeowner can do to save money on heating costs. Additionally, the coziness factor goes way up because sealing up the house tight reduces those pesky drafts. I kicked off my effort by making sure the weather stripping around all of the doors was replaced. Then, I upgraded the front storm door. I spent a Saturday caulking any gap or crack I could find on the exterior of my home. The following day, I did the same in the attic before laying down another layer of insulation. Finally, I reinsulated a troublesome window casing to be sure that it wasn’t letting HVAC treated air our or cold air in. I think it will all pay off.
