Getting the house ready for winter

I spent a Monday caulking any gap or crack I was able to find on the exterior of our home

Here we go with the winter again. It’s here and the cold is upon us! The HVAC system is pumping & all of us are spending far less time outdoors because of the cold. Plus, with the spike in the virus spread, it’s more time with just our immediate family in our new home this winter. And since I have been working from our new home since all this started, I imagine I will be doing the same for multiple more weeks to come. You know, just to be safe. With this thought in mind, I decided to redouble all of our efforts in order to make our new home as cozy as it can possibly be this year. And saving a bunch of money on the heating bills didn’t hurt my wallet either! Back in the fall, I took some time to be sure that our home was the most prepared that it has ever been for the winter. Our new home was built in the early part of the century and though it is in good shape, it’s not as tightly sealed as it once was. I found out that making sure the home is sealed up well is 1 of the best things a homeowner can do to save money on heating costs. Additionally, the coziness factor goes way up. That’s because sealing up the home really reduces those pesky drafts in the winter. I kicked off our efforts by making sure the weather stripping around all of the doors was replaced and in good shape and then I updated the front storm door. I spent a Monday caulking any gap or crack I was able to find on the exterior of our home. Then I did the same in the attic before laying down another layer of insulation up there. Finally, I reinsulated our window casing to be sure that it wasn’t letting HVAC treated air outside or the chilly air in. I believe it will all pay off.
