Failing at completing a heating repair

Not everyone is handy by nature.

  • Everyone has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to making improvements around the house.

For example, the gardens and the backyard at my house look amazing. My wife, Anne, takes pride in sharing all the vegetables that we grow with our family, neighbors and friends. Need something sewed? She can knit or mend anything. When it comes to regular household repairs, Anne isn’t as well versed. In the middle of the Christmas season, our furnace started to act strange and the unit wouldn’t kick on as often as we needed it. I checked that the pilot light was lit and that’s about the extent of what I know about a heating. My wife decided that rather than hire a professional for the furnace repair, we should try it ourselves. She figured we could use the help of online videos. Thinking that the issue might just be the furnace igniter, I went along with her plan. Everything went wrong and after a few trips to the store for parts and filters, we were left without a working furnace. We found the number for a local contractor and called them immediately. The HVAC company was very helpful in sending out a technician right away. Anne and I learned a lot about what not to do to the heating system that day. We decided that since the cost of the repair was almost as much as replacing the furnace, we might as well make the upgrade. We also learned that it is better the repairs are left to the professionals!
